Summer Camp 2004, Finland

Tarus

Helsinki

St. Petersburg

The 1st Atherton 2004 Summer Camp was held in Finland.

This was attended by members from the Scout and Explorer Scout sections with leaders and a few guests.Tarus

The first week was spent at Tarus, the Finnish Jamboree. For the first few days the weather was 'challenging' with most of the Summers expected rain falling in just a few days. We camped with a Finnish host group. Activities included canoeing, belt making, overnight hike, Finnish crafts and games, swimming and of course sauna!Helsinki

For the second week we moved to Helsinki, camping just a short train ride from the centre. This gave us the opportunity to do some sightseeing in the capital of Finland.

From Helsinki we took a cruise down the Baltic to St. Petersburg in Russia. While there we had a tour of the city to see the sights. In the afternoon St. Petersburgwe went round the Hermitage - the famous art gallery in the Winter Palace. We had 2 nights on the cruise ship which had a swimming pool, night club, etc. The cost of this trip was helped by a grant from Atherton Building Communities SRB5.

A few of us also took the opportunity to cross the Baltic to see Tallinn, a medieval walled city in Estonia.

Some of the Scout Network came to Finland too, however they went to the north of the country to go trekking in the Finnish forests towards the Arctic Circle.
