Mobile Climbing Tower

Funded by ABC SRB5

In 2003, 1st Atherton Scout Group were awarded an SRB5 grant through Atherton Building Communities which enabled us to completely refurbish the building and to purchase a mobile climbing tower.

ABC have also supported other activities, included providing funding towards a trip to St. Petersburg in Russia as part of our 2004 Summer Camp.

Atherton Building Communities listens to what local people need and gets them involved in making changes to improve life on the Hag Fold estate. It started in 1999, with £5.95m won from round five of the government's single regeneration budget by economic regeneration team. There is a partnership board made up of local residents, councillors and businesses, which decides which projects get a share of the cash.

The building refurbishment included:

Ground floor - Re-decoration and carpeting, lights and re-wiring, disabled toilet, new fire door at rear.

First floor - Re-decoration, new surfacing to stairs and floor, 'plexiglass' protection over windows, new lights and re-wiring, fire door to external escape, re-furbished boys and girls toilets.

Cellar - walls and floor waterproof rendered to keep it dry.

Exterior - A fence surrounding the grassed area, disabled access ramp to the front door, external fire escape from first floor, some roof work.

Pictures of the refurbishment taking place can be seen in our photo gallery.

The mobile climbing tower can be taken to camps and events and set up to provide four climbing routes. The grant also covered safety equipment including harnesses, helmets, ropes, mats and other gear.

Of course, it's not just the Scout Group who have benefited from the grants. The other community groups who use the building (the Parent and Toddler group and the Martial Arts Group) have also benefited from the improved facilities.

The Scout Group, and the other groups using the facilities, are grateful to Atherton Building Communities for awarding us the SRB5 grant money to enable us to achieve all that we have over the last few years.
