Explorer Scouts

The Explorer Scout section covers the ages 14 to 18.

Our unit has taken its name from the nickname given to Baden-Powell by the African Matabele tribe. Impeesa is 'the wolf that never sleeps' or 'the beast that does not sleep, but walks in the night'. In fact there are no wolves in Africa - the translation should probably be hyena rather than wolf

Impeesa ESU is a group based unit, an integral part of the 1st Atherton Scout Group. We specialise in adventurous outdoor activities. Our ESL is one of the Greater Manchester West Champions of Expertise for Climbing and the groups GSL is one of the Champions of Expertise for Mountain Walking.

Activities include Climbing, Mountain Walking, Air Rifle Shooting, Camping, Cooking, Canoeing, First Aid, Snowboarding, etc.

In 2005 many of the Explorers have been involved in their award schemes and in helping running the climbing tower at various events. They've joined up with other groups such as Conway and Bolton. In the Summer they all went to the Isle of Man for the Group Summer Camp. Most recently they've taken part in the County Camping Competition and been to the Mersey Moot.
